Well, no sooner do I have a 64 bit processor than my friend Tomo gives me a disk with a 64 bit operating system (you can kinda guess it’s not xp64!)
Ubuntu Linux. What can I say. It works, I can open all those ‘standard’ format files like doc, xls and ppt. and it’s FREE!! Nice.
On my new pc it boots nice and quickly, and even detected all my hardware (fnnnar!) such as my M-Audio soundcard (it’s the Audiophile 24/96) and the only sticking point is with audio, because I have 2 soundcards it appears not to want to play any audio files. Bum. But I can live without that for the moment.
I can also read and write to my NTFS partitions so that is a bonus and it discovered my network setting in 10 seconds flat, so I’m able to look at all the computers on my network (and surprisingly access the boot drive of my Win2k box, I think there is a hole there I need to plug.)
I don’t know if I want to use Linux as my main system yet, I need to know more about how to use and abuse it, but those things will come in time.
Enjoy.
Wayne.
